Jagalur Muhammad Imam (J M Imam)

The J M Imam Memorial High School, Jagalur was started in memory of Sri Jagalur Mohammad Imam (J M Imam) (15-02-1897 - 03-01-1983) to uphold his ideals and cultivate his thoughts.

Sri Jagalur Mohammad Imam (J M Imam) was an eminent, well-known and respected politician, thinker, and educationist, active from the 1920s to the 1970s, in the princely state of Mysore before independence and the State of Mysore/Karnataka, INDIA after independence.

Sri J M Imam, popularly known as "Immanna" (ಇಮ್ಮಣ್ಣ), was a Minister in the Princely State of Mysore under the Maharaja of Mysore, Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the State of Mysore/Karnataka, Leader of Opposition for the first four Chief Ministers in the Legislative Assembly of the State of Mysore/Karnataka, Member of Parliament/Lok Sabha (MP) and held many more positions, and he was known to have played a significant role in Mysore/Karnataka State, INDIA (South India).

Sri J M Imam was born on February 15, 1897, in Marenahalli, a village in Jagalur taluk, Karnataka, INDIA (South India). His father was J.F. Bade Sab and his mother was Fakru Bi. He completed his education in Jagalur, Chitradurga, Bengaluru, and Madras (Chennai). He obtained Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Law (LLB) degrees from the University of Madras.

POLITICAL CAREER

1925

he was elected as the first President of Jagalur Municipality.

1928

he was elected to the senate of the Mysore University.

1930-1957

he became a member of the legislature (later Legislative Assembly) of the Mysore state (before independence). He would continue to be Mysore legislature until 1957.

1936

he became President of District Board Chitradurga District.

1941-1945

he was Minister in Princely State of Mysore for Education, Railways and Public Works Departments. He was appointed as "Khaasa" (or private) minister directly by Sri Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar, Maharaja of Mysore. (Mysore state, at that time, had only 3 ministers (Diwan (Chief Minister) and 2 private ministers))

1945

the Maharaja of Mysore named him 'Mushir ul-Mulk' ('Advisor of the Kingdom') or "ಸಜ್ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಜ್ಜನ" ("Sajjanaralli Sajjana") (A gentleman among gentlemen)

After Independence Of India In 1947:

1947-1957

From 1947 till 1957, he was Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for State of Mysore/Karnataka

From 1947 till 1957, he was also "Leader of Opposition" in Legislative Assembly for the first 4 Chief Ministers, Sri K.C. Reddy, Sri Kengal Hanumanthayya, Sri Kadidal Manjappa, and Sri S. Nijalingappa, of State of Mysore/Karnataka

1957-1970

From 1957 till 1970, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for 2 terms in 2nd and 4th Lok Sabha representing Chitradurga constituency.

He was also Member of the Panel of Chairmen in Lok Sabha and “hangami” speaker of Parliament/Lok Sabha for short period of time.
